Power FAQs

Q: Do I need to add a fuse to the input end of the module?

Answer: When the circuit is faulty or abnormal, the current will continue to increase, and the increased current may damage some important or valuable components in the circuit, and may also burn the circuit or even cause a fire. If the fuse is correctly placed in the circuit, the fuse will cut off the current by itself when the current abnormally rises to a certain height and at a certain time, thus protecting the safe operation of the circuit. According to international safety standards, a fuse should be added to the (+) input of the module, and the board needs to be grounded.

Q: Do ENARGY POWER modules require a heat sink?

Answer: It depends on a number of factors in the application; such as the maximum ambient temperature where the module is located, whether forced convection is present, load characteristics, and converter efficiency. One thing to note is that the module with the base plate is compared with the package of the open or exposed board converter. If you need to install a heat sink, the former is more flexible and easier.

Q: What is PFC?

Answer: PFC (Power Factor Correction) is power factor correction, which is mainly used to characterize the utilization efficiency of electrical energy by electronic products. The higher the power factor, the higher the utilization efficiency of electrical energy. Because the switching power supply adopts capacitor input filtering, the power factor is very low, generally only about 0.65, which greatly reduces the utilization rate of AC power. With this, the serious non-sinusoidal distortion of the input current increases the pollution to the power grid. In order to improve the power There are two types of PFC, one is passive PFC (also called passive PFC), and the other is active PFC (also called active PFC).

Q: What is a Y capacitor, can it be replaced by other capacitors?

Answer: The ceramic capacitors are connected between the two input lines to the ground respectively. The power conversion module generally requires a bypass capacitor between the line and the chassis (earth) to bypass the common mode noise and confine it in the converter. When the converter works on AC rectified voltage and the bypass capacitor is damaged, it may cause serious leakage to the chassis of the electrical appliance, triggering a ground fault and electric shock crisis. For this reason, a class of application-specific capacitors (called Y-capacitors) are used. These capacitors have a built-in "self-healing" dielectric property to avoid excessive leakage. To comply with EMC requirements. Y-capacitors comply with IEC384-14, IEC132400 and UL1283 standards. Y-capacitor and common-mode inductor are used together to suppress common-mode noise. From the perspective of EMI filter alone, the larger the Y-capacitor, the better, but from the safety point of view, the smaller the Y-capacitor, the better, because the leakage current The size depends on the capacity of the Y capacitor for EMI filtering, and the final capacity of the Y capacitor should be determined according to safety standards.

Q: When do I need to use the TRIM function?

Answer: When the output connection line is very long and the voltage drop on the connection line has a great influence, the user can fine-tune the output voltage within the range of about ±5% of the rated value by connecting an external resistor at the TRIM end. The power of the power module should be limited to the maximum rated output power. If the output voltage is higher than its nominal value, the output current should be reduced to meet the maximum output power limit.

Q: I have 5V and 2.5V power modules on hand, can I use them in series to output 7.5V?

Answer: The isolation module of DC output allows multiple modules to be used in series, but we do not recommend using them in series. We recommend using our 7.5V output module.

Q: I need a medical power supply with 3KW output, what should I do if there is no suitable model?

Answer: You can use four of our 800W medical power supplies in parallel. For detailed connection methods, please contact our technical support engineer.

Q: ±12V dual output power module with 2 loads, one large and one small, what will be the change of output voltage and current?

Answer: The two-way load is unbalanced, and the output voltage will change with the load factor. When the current of one channel rises, the voltage will drop, and the voltage of the other channel will rise.
